Hope and faith found and shared in Lockdown, Behind the Mask

Lockdown and confinement forced us to stay inside, but it also provided an opportunity to look inside.”

Zee Monodee, award-winning author

Eighteen stories from women who ‘looked inside’ appear in this powerful and moving collection to be launched in Johannesburg on Saturday, 7 November 2020. Afrika Impressions Media is proud to announce its collaboration with the editing team, as the publisher. Spokesperson, Mohammad Amra was on board and was positive that this was only the first of many collaborative projects.

While all the stories focus on the Lockdown with an Islamic signature, not all the writers are Muslim. This has allowed a diverse collection from a variety of perspectives. The writers had free reign in genre chosen, whether fiction or non-fiction and what is clear, is that all the women wrote with much introspection and honesty. Although some of the writers are established and in print, many are being published for the first time, so this has been an exciting and empowering opportunity. Each has been motivated to put pen to paper and their hearts in their words.

Royalties, due to the contributors, will be donated. Lockdown, Behind the Mask, has partnered with an NGO, The Valley Trust in KwaZulu Natal and all proceeds will go towards their Khulakahle Mntwana Programme.  This programme equips more than 2,000 caregivers in the rural Valley of 1,000 Hills with knowledge and skills to ensure the healthy development of their young children.  Caregivers are trained in nutrition, growth monitoring, physical and cognitive stimulation for their children and assisted to increase their household incomes in various ways.  S’bo Vilakazi, executive director of The Valley Trust, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the recipients and looks forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship.

To minimise contact and facilitate social distancing and observation of all COVID protocols, tickets to the launch will be presold. A ticket is R200 and includes entrance for two people and a copy of the book. Guests will have the opportunity to meet many of the writers and get their copies signed. Additional copies will also be available on the day.
