This book is unique in that the child (to whom the book is given) is the main character. His/her name appears throughout the book together with those of some of his/her relatives or friends. In this way, the child can personally identify with the book, become directly involved in the story, and in doing so, develop a better understanding of Ramadan and Eid.

First published in 1993, “The New Moon”, a story about Ramadan written by Nadia Minty, is being re-released with new illustrations.

The story tells of the child’s anticipation on the evening before Eid, gently introducing concepts such as zakaat and taraweeh. It follows the child through the excitement and warmth of spending a memorable Eid day with family and friends.

“Rush and excitement of Eid”

I received The New Moon from my parents as an Eid gift. lt’s always been a must read every year the night before Eid. It amazed me as a child because it had that personalized touch – a story about the rush and excitement about Eid night and Eid day and having your favourite cousins, aunts and uncles names being mentioned in the book which gave me that thrill as a child. When I got married I learnt that my husband had the same book personalized for him and the same tradition of reading it the night before Eid, so that was very special!
